One of the lesser known and under appreciated coffee producers from East Africa, Burundi continues to put out excellent coffees every year. Like most African countries, coffee production was a byproduct of colonization. In 1962, when Burundi gained its independence, coffee continued to be a major export and important economic staple for the country. A civil war halted coffee production from 1993 to 2005 when export from the landlocked country was made nearly impossible. Since then, the country has been rebuilding its coffee industry and its reputation for high quality, specialty grade coffee. This coffee comes to us from a community washing station, like the majority of coffees from East Africa. Several small farmers (owning crops often less than one hectare) bring their coffee to a community washing station where it’s carefully sorted and processed to create a “regional blend”. This blend highlights the efforts of the small landholders and the producers who work hard to create coffees that can hold their own against larger and better known coffee producing countries. We’re stoked to bring this coffee to you, with floral notes, a delicate acidity and an incredible overall sweetness.
